Kabul, June 13, 2025 — Afghanistan’s Taliban-led government on Friday issued a strong condemnation of recent Israeli military strikes on Iran, warning that the escalating tensions risk plunging the region into greater instability and undermining international law.

In a statement shared on social media platform X (formerly Twitter), Taliban spokesperson Zabihullah Mujahid described the attacks, which reportedly killed senior Iranian military commanders and nuclear scientists, as a serious breach of international norms.

“The strikes constitute a clear violation of the fundamental principles of international law, particularly national sovereignty,” Mujahid wrote. “The continuation of such tension-provoking actions has made the situation in the region even more fragile and worrying.”

Call for Restraint and Regional Dialogue

The Taliban authorities, who do not recognize the state of Israel, called on all involved parties and international stakeholders to intervene and defuse tensions before they escalate into a wider conflict.

“We urge all stakeholders to address this issue and prevent the spread of further insecurity and instability in the region,” the statement read.

The condemnation comes amid mounting international concern that the Israeli strikes could spark a broader regional confrontation, particularly as Iran vows retaliation and mobilizes military assets near its western borders.

Impact on US-Iran Nuclear Talks

The attacks have already cast a shadow over planned nuclear negotiations between the United States and Iran, scheduled to take place in Oman on Sunday. Diplomatic sources say the prospects for a breakthrough have diminished significantly, with Tehran accusing Israel and its Western allies of deliberately sabotaging the dialogue.

Observers warn that the strikes not only risk military escalation but also threaten to derail years of painstaking diplomacy aimed at curbing Iran’s nuclear program and de-escalating Middle East tensions.

Taliban-Iran Relations in Focus

The Taliban government’s vocal support for Iran comes amid growing ties between the two nations. Since seizing power in 2021, the Taliban have maintained relatively warm relations with Tehran, one of the few countries that has engaged diplomatically with their administration, though Iran has not formally recognized the Taliban-led government.

Shared concerns over regional security, border management, and cross-border trade have pushed both governments toward closer cooperation. Iran has also served as a critical economic partner and energy supplier to landlocked Afghanistan, particularly in the wake of international sanctions and economic isolation.

Despite their growing relationship, the two sides have also faced tensions in recent years, especially over water rights from the Helmand River and the treatment of Afghan refugees in Iran. Nevertheless, Friday’s statement signals a united front on issues of national sovereignty and opposition to Israeli military interventions.

Widening Condemnation Across the Region

Afghanistan joins a growing chorus of countries and political actors in the region condemning Israel’s actions. Iran has accused Israel of waging a campaign of targeted assassinations and infrastructure sabotage aimed at undermining its nuclear ambitions and military capabilities, an accusation Israel has neither confirmed nor denied.

With the death toll rising and diplomatic efforts faltering, international observers warn that the region is entering a dangerous new phase of volatility. Calls are intensifying for the United Nations and global powers to step in and prevent further escalation.

As tensions continue to simmer, Afghanistan’s warning adds a new layer to the complex and fragile web of alliances in the Middle East, and underscores the far-reaching geopolitical implications of the Israeli-Iranian conflict.
