DPP Opposes Plea For Suspect In Tirop Murder

Mbugua stated that the murder trial would cause the family more pain and anxiety because of the circumstances surrounding Tirop's death.

The Directorate of Public Prosecutions (ODPP) has strongly opposed the move to enter into plea bargaining with Ibrahim Rotich.

Mr. Rotich is accused of the gruesome murder of renown athlete Agnes Tirop.

Rotich, through his lawyer Allan Ngigi Mbugua, applied in May of this year for permission to plead guilty to a lesser charge as part of “the healing process.”

“My client wishes to pursue a plea bargain with the family of his estranged wife in order to alleviate the pain they are experiencing since her death last year.” “We agree that a life has been lost in this tragic incident, which is why we prefer the route of plea bargaining,” Mbugua said.

Mbugua stated that the murder trial would cause the family more pain and anxiety because of the circumstances surrounding Tirop’s death.

State counsel Mark Mogun, however, told the court that the state was not ready to consent to his application.

“We are aware of the application, but the republic is not ready to yield to the application at the moment because the republic is ready to charge him with murder,” the prosecution stated.
