President advisor on women rights harriette chiggai has put on
notice perpetrators of rape even as cases of sodomy continues to escalate.
chiggai who launched the 16 days of activism against gender based violence
before visitng various gender based violence centres and safe houses in nairobi
county vowed to incorporate the police in tracking down gender based violence
offenders.sexual violence is the most common form of gender-based violence.
The cases are more common in informal settlements. The increasing trend of
sodomy is alarming.
According to the statistics released by the kenya health information system,
121 boys below the age of 11 were sodomised in nairobi county between the month
of january and september this year,a trend that is so worrying.
In the same age bracket,552 girls were defiled .the same statistics revealed
that 87 boys aged between 12 and 17 were defiled with 1568 cases of young
girls raped being reported.
It is said that the culprits are young men, some police officers and some
pastors, who initiate young men into sex cults.
They target both the young, the mentally challenged and the elderly who may
be molesting in a thicket or at the victim’s house.
Flanked by nairobi gender-based violence coordinator roselyn mukabana and
other gbv champions, chiggai said there is need for the two levels of
government to collaborate in order to weed out rogue elements defiling
children.
The president advisor on women rights launched the ongoing 16 days of
activism against GBV asking stakeholders to use the opportunity in sensitizing
the public about the dangers of GBV.
