Spanish midfielder Alex Baena has completed a move to Atletico Madrid on a five-year contract, the La Liga club confirmed on Wednesday.
The 23-year-old joins from Villarreal CF for an undisclosed fee, though Spanish media reports estimate the deal to be worth close to €50 million ($58.8 million). The agreement will keep Baena at the Wanda Metropolitano until June 30, 2030.
“Atletico de Madrid and Villarreal have reached an agreement for the transfer of Alex Baena. The 23-year-old midfielder has signed for our club until June 30, 2030,” Atletico said in an official statement.
Baena, a product of Villarreal’s youth academy, made 148 appearances for the Yellow Submarine, contributing 26 goals and 40 assists. He spent the 2021/22 season on loan at Girona, returning to Villarreal to become a central figure in their attacking midfield.
Known for his creativity, vision, and set-piece prowess, Baena’s arrival is expected to bolster Diego Simeone’s midfield options ahead of a competitive 2025/26 season.
On the international stage, Baena has earned 10 caps for Spain and was part of the squad that clinched the UEFA European Championship title last summer.
His signing marks another statement of intent from Atletico Madrid, who are aiming to challenge for domestic and European honors in the upcoming campaign.
