Lamu Governor Issa Timamy has urged President William Ruto to consider making the housing fund levy optional.
Timamy believes that allowing individuals to contribute to the fund would relieve financial stress on low-income earners.
The governor, who is also the acting party leader of the Amani National Congress (ANC), believes that such a change would empower citizens to make their own financial decisions.
“In my view, it should not be compulsory. Kuna watu wengine tayari wamejizatiti wakajenga nyumba zao, kwa hivyo kwa sasa hawana haja ila kwa wale wanaotaka ili wafaidike,” said the governor.
