The Football Supporters’ Association has condemned the price of tickets for the upcoming FIFA World Cup as a “laughable insult” to fans, with costs soaring to more than three times those of the 2022 tournament in Qatar.
Under the new pricing structure, the cheapest ticket for the final will cost £3,119, while group-stage ticket prices have also surged dramatically. For supporters from many smaller nations, the price of a single group-stage ticket now exceeds a month’s average wage—before accounting for travel and accommodation.
This has sparked a wave of frustration among fans. One Ghana supporter told the BBC of the “anger and disappointment” felt by Black Stars fans who may now be forced to cancel their travel plans due to the prohibitive costs.
Despite the backlash, FIFA reported receiving five million ticket requests from over 200 countries within the first 24 hours of the latest sales phase opening on Friday. The stark contrast between high demand and soaring prices highlights a growing divide between the global spectacle of the tournament and the ability of ordinary fans to afford access to it.
