At least three people including two police officers were killed in an ambush by al-Shabaab militants at the Tarbi area in Guba Ward along the Banisa-Rhamu road in Mandera County.
According to reports, the officers died instantly while five others sustained serious injuries as a result of the incident which occurred late last evening.
Police said that the vehicle the officers were traveling in was hit by an Improvised Explosive Device (IED) marking yet another deadly attack in the area.
The third deceased man is said to have been a local road engineer who had apparently hiked a lift on the vehicle.
The vehicle was on escort duties and was escorting a PSV bus when the incident happened, police said.
No injury was reported on the bus, police said. The terrorists behind the attack escaped.
Mandera County Commissioner Amos Mariba said the injured officers are receiving treatment at Banisa Sub County Referral Hospital.
The attack happened one day after all the security heads and the County leaders embarked on a new route to devise innovative ways to deal with insecurity and violent extremism.
This follows increased attacks which have forced officials to ban non-locals from traveling on the road in the area.
