Attack on Hospital in Sudan Kills More Than 100, WHO Reports

WHO Chief Calls Sudan Hospital Attack 'Senseless' as Death Toll Reaches 114

The head of the World Health Organization (WHO), Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, condemned a drone attack on a kindergarten and hospital in Sudan that killed 114 people, including at least 63 children, as a “senseless” act of violence.

The assault took place on Thursday in the town of Kalogi in South Kordofan, a region on the front lines of Sudan’s civil war. Both the Sudanese army and the medical group Sudan Doctors’ Network blamed the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) for the attack.

Separately, the RSF claimed to have seized control of Sudan’s largest oil field, Heglig, marking a significant escalation in the conflict.

Sudan has been engulfed in war since April 2023, when a power struggle erupted between the army and the RSF, former allies. The Kordofan region, comprising North, South, and West Kordofan, has become a major battleground as the army advances toward RSF-held Darfur.

Initial reports put the death toll from the Kalogi strike at over 50, but the WHO’s Attacks on Health Care monitoring system later confirmed 114 fatalities and 35 injuries. The attack highlights the devastating toll of the conflict on civilians, particularly children, and the growing humanitarian crisis in the region.
