Azimio la Umoja One Kenya Alliance coalition party has nominated Embakasi West MP Mark Mwenje as National Assembly deputy Minority Whip to replace Sabina Chege.
Mwenje replaces the former Murang’a Woman Representative who has shifted allegiance to Kenya Kwanza.
In its parliamentary group meeting on Tuesday, Minority Leader in the National Assembly Opiyo Wandayi announced that the decision was met after the party de-whipped MP Chege from the position on grounds that she has shown allegiance to the ruling government.
The minority leader added that the decision is in furtherance of a Jubilee party National Delegates Conference (NDC) where MP Chege was expelled from the party’s leadership.
“Azimio has today settled on Hon. Mark Mwenje as the Deputy Minority Whip of the National Assembly. He will be taking up the position which was left vacant upon the removal of Hon. Sabina Chege about a month ago,” he said.
“We recognize him as a committed consistent, energetic and youthful fighter who has shown the will to stand up for the people and fight for the party. We have no doubt he will prove equal to the task.”
Wandayi also stated that they want the decision to be enforced by the Office of the Registrar of Political Parties (ORPP) Anne Nderitu in order to increase the party’s representation in the National Assembly.
MP Chege’s removal from the position, however, is pending approval from Speaker Moses Wetangula, who had refused to approve her removal, urging the coalition to first put their house in order.
