Babu Owino Makes Court Debut as Advocate, Defends Protest Suspects

Nairobi, Kenya – June 27, 2025

Embakasi East MP Babu Owino made his first appearance in court as a High Court advocate on Thursday, representing two suspects linked to the June 25 protest anniversary demonstrations that rocked parts of Nairobi and other regions.

Owino appeared alongside lawyer John Maina to defend Suleiman Wanjau Bilali, a former national boxing team captain, and Robert Otiti Elwak, an ex-Harambee Stars player. The two were arrested in Muthurwa and Kayole and brought to court as police sought to detain them for 10 more days to complete investigations.

The suspects are accused of publishing false and inflammatory information on social media, allegedly aimed at mobilizing unlawful protests.

Police told Senior Principal Magistrate Dolphina Alego that the two had shared a provocative protest timetable on X (formerly Twitter), calling for demonstrations near State House.

Prosecutors further claimed the suspects were part of a wider group plotting to infiltrate peaceful Gen Z-led demonstrations with violent elements, posing a potential threat to national security.

The investigating officer alleged that the suspects encouraged looting, incited public disorder, and fueled violence. Authorities requested additional time to analyze the suspects’ mobile phones, examine their financial records, and gather witness statements.

The Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP) supported the application, citing the complexity and seriousness of the matter.

However, Owino opposed the request, arguing that the prosecution had not presented sufficient evidence to justify extended detention. He described the suspects as national heroes, citing their contributions to Kenyan sports.

The two were released on a personal bond of Ksh 50,000 or an alternative cash bail of Ksh 20,000 each. The case will be mentioned on July 8, 2025.
