Baby Sagini Grandmother, Aunt, Cousin Charged With Attempted Murder

Three suspects were on Friday arraigned and charged with attempted murder in relation with an attack on Baby Junior Sagini.

Alex Ochogo (Sagini’s cousin), Pacifica Nyakerario (Aunt), and Rael Nyakerario (Grandmother) appeared in a Kisii law court and pleaded not guilty.

The suspects allegedly attempted to unlawfully cause the death of Sagini by gouging out both of his eyes on December 13th and 14th, 2022, at the Ikuruma location in Marani Subcounty, in violation of Section 220 of the Penal Code.

The prosecution argued that the suspects should be denied bond or bail as they may interfere with witnesses, some of whom are close relatives, and because there is a risk of public disorder and harm to the suspects from members of the public.

Nduhukire Anita, the victim’s advocate, also supported the denial of bond or bail.

As a result, the suspects were remanded without bond or bail and will be held in Kisii prisons until their trial on January 18th, 2023.

At least six witnesses are expected to testify against the suspects.

Sagini is currently in the care of Children’s officers and receiving medical treatment.

The attack on Sagini is thought to be related to family land disputes, and that Sagini was in line of inheritance for the family’s land, which may have caused tension within the family.
