BCLB Reinstates SportPesa Licence

SportPesa which has been operating using a court order since resuming business in November 2020 will now operate under Betting Control and Licensing number 0000448.

After a rocky month of operations, a number of betting companies, including major sports investors like SportPesa, have finally received their licenses for the 2022–2023 trading period.

The decision, which comes a few weeks before the start of the new Kenya Premier League football season on September 10, is welcomed by a number of clubs and sports organizations that have had difficulty finding sponsors for their teams.

All betting businesses must renew their licenses every year before they expire on June 30.

SportPesa which has been operating using a court order since resuming business in November 2020 will now operate under Betting Control and Licensing number 0000448.

Other firms that have so far received their licenses include Betika, Odibets, Sportybet, Shabiki and Betsafe among others.

SportPesa, once a major investor in the country’s premier league football, is currently the main club sponsor of the National Super League (NSL) side Murang’a Seals.

SportPesa is renowned for supporting Kenyan grassroots sport and promoting memorable sports events such as Nairobi Fight Nights and SportPesa Super 8 League.

AFC Leopards and Gor Mahia who were sponsored by Betsafe at the start of the 2021/2022 KPL season had to look for new sponsors mid-season. The two popular clubs are now sponsored by Betika and BetArique respectively.
