Beyond Zero donates assorted food items to Nyumbani Children’s Home

Nyumbani Children’s home has thanked First Lady Margaret Kenyatta’s Beyond Zero initiative for a donation of assorted food and non-food items – By Gerald Gekara and PSCU

The donation is part of the Beyond Zero’s contribution to the national fight against the Coronavirus pandemic.

Nyumbani Children’s Home Executive Director Sister Mary Owen says the donation has come at the right time and will boost her institution’s efforts to provide a dignified life to the vulnerable children.

The donation included bags of beans, Uji mix flour, maize flour, bags of sugar, cartons of cooking oil, boxes of long-life milk and face masks.

The package was presented to Sister Mary Owen on April 28 by Beyond Zero Coordinator Ms Angella Langat who was accompanied by Ms Vivianne Ngugi and Ms Eva Maina, both from the Office of the First Lady.

“I want to thank Her Excellency First Lady Margaret Kenyatta and Beyond Zero for the food support during this time of the COVID-19 pandemic.

“We are not only grateful for the food donation but also for knowing that you think about us and the children we care for.” Sister Mary Owen said.

Nyumbani Children’s Home was founded 28 years ago, and currently is home to 83 orphans.

Apart from the Nyumbani Children’s home located in Karen, the charitable children’s institution also runs a community-based programme that caters for 14,220 children mostly from Nairobi’s informal settlements.

The organization also established the Nyumbani Village in Kitui which takes care of 950 vulnerable children.

The donation to Nyumbani Children’s home is in line with the Beyond Zero’s second Strategic Framework that focuses on the promotion of good nutrition for children and advocates for their social inclusion among other key areas of intervention including the prevention of HIV infection and maternal and child mortality.
