At least 17 people were discovered dead inside a South African nightclub, with claims that they were poisoned or killed in a stampede.

Members of the public alerted police to the Enyobeni Tavern in Scenery Park, a township in the southern city of East London, in the early hours of Sunday, according to South African authorities.

Brigadier Tembinkosi Kinana said: ‘The circumstances of their deaths are being investigated,’ adding that it was too early to determine the cause of death of the adults, who were all between the ages of 18 and 20.

According to Daily Dispatch reporters, those who died were either poisoned or were killed in a stampede.

Unverified social media images showed bodies strewn on the club floor with no visible signs of injury.
