The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) has announced the commencement of the identification process for the bodies of the 21 pupils who tragically lost their lives in a dormitory fire at Hillside Endarasha Academy.
This process will begin on Monday at Naromoru Level 4 Hospital, as confirmed by Nyeri County Commissioner Pius Murugu.
Murugu described the identification process as “tedious and long,” emphasizing the devastating impact of the fire, which rendered the bodies beyond recognition.
He noted, “Many more students are missing, but that process will start tomorrow at Naromoru. We hope to conclude it soon.” This sorrowful event has left the community and the nation grappling with grief.
Murugu stated that the government will cover any medical expenses incurred by students currently hospitalized due to the fire. Additionally, he assured that the government will take charge of funeral arrangements for the deceased pupils.
In light of the national examinations scheduled for this term, Murugu revealed plans to convene with the Ministry of Education to expedite the reopening of the school.
“Even though boarding will be delayed, day school will continue as we make plans for the boarding part,” he added.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation, with initial reports suggesting it may have stemmed from an electrical fault. As questions linger, officials hope to clarify the circumstances surrounding this heartbreaking tragedy.
