Body of 15-Year-Old Girl Who Drowned in Kirinyaga Recovered

The body of Joy Wanjiru, a 15-year-old girl who drowned on Sunday at Gatitika Falls in River Nyamindi, Kimbimbi area of Mwea Constituency, has been recovered after an extensive search.

The teenager slipped and fell into the river while visiting the scenic falls with a friend. Her male companion, a resident of Red Soil Village, immediately reported the incident at Kimbimbi Police Post, after which her family was notified by the authorities.

Local residents from Kimbimbi, Gatitika, Mathangauta, Ngucue, and Red Soil joined the search, led by the girl’s father, Danson Njue. “Joy was accompanied by her friend when she slipped and fell at Gatitika Falls. Her male friend reported the incident to the police, who later informed me,” Njue said.

According to Simon Waweru and Irungu Mwangi, bodaboda operators from Kimbimbi Trading Centre, the body was discovered floating by a resident crossing the river on Wednesday morning.

Paul Muriithi, a local resident, confirmed that the recovery was made possible after the water levels receded overnight, aided by efforts from government agencies.

Officers from Wang’uru Police Station retrieved the body and transported it to a local mortuary for further examination.

The incident has cast a somber mood over the community as residents mourn the tragic loss of a young life.
