The closure of schools and learning centers brought the education sector to a standstill, with parents clueless on how they will engage their young in schooling alternatives.
However, the plight of supporting businesses in the country may have been overlooked when the Ministry of Education was extending an olive branch to teachers and public schools.
Despite the economic challenges experienced during this pandemic, several bookshops have wallowed in losses owing to the drastic fall in demand for books, examinations and stationery.
However, a spot check by Uzalendo News team revealed that Savinis bookshop, a market guru in existence for decades, is still in operation. Though battered hard by the effects of a lockdown in the education department, the bookshop remains optimistic.
Sales representative Munoru Rhoney has told Uzalendo news that it has been hard for them since only a few customers are buying from Savanis bookshop.
“Since the closure of schools in March, we have sold very few books. Majority of them being revision books.” He said.
Rhoney says that in the run up to the national examinations that would normally take place in October, alot of customers visit Savanis bookshop to get revision materials and stationery.
“At this time, it would be very hard to get space to even idle and choose books for yourself because Savanis bookshop is full. We really hope the Ministry is considering our plight and looking for a solution to safeguard us,” He added.
He however remains hopeful that the Ministry of Education CS Prof. George Magoha would circumnavigate the pandemic’s effects and effect the reopening of schools in October for candidates.
