At least 10 students are feared dead following a dormitory fire at Utumishi Girls Academy in Gilgil, Nakuru County.

The fire is said to have broken out at about 1am, with the Kenya Red Cross saying the incident was reported at around 3.30am on Thursday.

The number of injuries was not immediately established, with reports indicating the school was conducting a headcount early Thursday.

Worried parents flocked the school following the incident, amid fears the death toll could rise.

The school said only parents will be allowed into the compound as authorities continue to account for learners.
