Bundesliga returns: Bayern Munich beat Union Berlin, Erling Haaland scores again as Borussia Dortmund thrash Schalke, RB Leipzig drop points in title race

The Bundesliga became the first major European football league to return amid the coronavirus pandemic – and the action did not disappoint.

All games were played behind closed doors as Bayern Munich maintained their lead at the top of the table with a 2-0 win over Union Berlin.

A Robert Lewandowski penalty and Benjamin Pavard header ensured second-placed Borussia Dortmund stayed four points behind Hans-Dieter Flick’s side.

Erling Haaland picked up where he left off by scoring Dortmund’s opening goal in a 4-0 thrashing of rivals Schalke.

The Norway teenager continued his remarkable goalscoring record by netting his tenth Bundesliga goal in just nine games since arriving in January.

His celebration – a nod to social distancing – summed up the occasion quite well.

Dortmund extended their lead thanks to strikes from Raphael Guerreiro (2) and Thorgan Hazard.

RB Leipzig dropped points in the title race as they were held to a 1-1 draw by Freiburg.

Manuel Gulde gave Freiburg a shock lead, before Yussuf Poulsen equalised with 13 minutes remaining.

Borussia Monchengladbach’s 3-1 victory over Eintracht Frankfurt saw them leapfrog Leipzig into third place.

Alassane Plea scored the weekend’s fastest goal with a 37-second strike, before Marcus Thuram and Ramy Bensebaini made it a comfortable evening for Gladbach.

Meanwhile, at the other end of the table, relegation-threatened Mainz came from two goals down to salvage a 2-2 draw with Koln.

Goals from Mark Uth and Florian Kainz put Koln in a commanding position, but Liverpool loanee Taiwo Awoniyi pulled one back, before Pierre Kunde levelled with a stunning solo effort.
