Bungoma MCA Allegedly Shot By Police During Ethanol Raid

A Bungoma County Member of the County Assembly (MCA) is nursing gunshot injuries he sustained in a police operation in Kimilili Town.

Kamukuywa Ward MCA Abraham ‘Obama’ Kimungui sustained the injuries during a chaotic confrontation with police over an impounded ethanol consignment.

The multi-agency ethanol operation involved the police, Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA), and Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI).

Mt Elgon Sub-County Police Commander Moffat Mong’era told the press that Kimungui, identified as the owner of the illegal consignment, mobilized over 50 armed goons to disrupt the operation and reclaim an impounded truck carrying 8,750 liters of ethanol.

“At the time, the MCA came with around 50 goons armed with crude weapons, stones, sticks and petrol contained in plastic bags. The intention was to disrupt and fight to retain the consignment that brought a commotion at around 2100 hours,” Mong’era said.

The family of the injured MCA insist that a police bullet shot him, while police have distanced themselves from shooting the county law maker.

Sub county police boss Mongera says what injured the MCA is yet to be ascertained.

“During the commotion, the MCA got injured with a sharp object which is yet to be confirmed because investigations are still ongoing,” he said.

The injured legislator was rushed to Bungoma County Referral Hospital before being transferred to Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital in Eldoret for specialized treatment.
