The Ministry of Education has ordered the indefinite closure of Bungoma National Polytechnic following violent protests that erupted on Tuesday.
This marks the second higher learning institution in Kenya to be shut down in one week due to unrest.
What began as a peaceful demonstration by students against the institution’s management quickly escalated into chaos, resulting in property destruction and clashes with police.
Tragically, one student was fatally shot during the standoff.
The protesters, supported by some staff members, were demanding the removal of Principal Dr. Rosebella Chukwu, accusing her of mismanagement and embezzlement.
On Wednesday, Dr. Chukwu confirmed the Ministry’s directive to close the polytechnic indefinitely, stating, “With the directive of the Ministry, I have been asked to close the school indefinitely.”
All learning activities have been suspended until further notice.
The protests, which saw students march through Kanduyi Town to demand intervention from area MP John Makali, were met with police resistance.
The fatal shooting of a female student during the confrontation has fueled outrage, with students demanding justice.
The closure of Bungoma National Polytechnic comes on the heels of similar unrest at Moi University, highlighting growing dissatisfaction with governance at Kenya’s higher education institutions.
