Bungoma County has been chosen as the host for the 2024 Madaraka Day celebrations, according to National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetangula.

Speaking during a Sunday church service in Bungoma, Wetang’ula praised President William Ruto for prioritizing the Western region in his development agenda. Wetang’ula acknowledged Ruto’s efforts, stating,

“You (Ruto) have respected Bungoma and allowed your government next year to celebrate Madaraka Day in Bungoma.”

Interior PS Raymon Omollo has dispatched officials from the Office of the President to survey Bungoma in preparation for the upcoming event.

This year, Kenyans gathered at Embu’s Moi Stadium for the 60th Madaraka Day celebrations, a first-time occurrence for the stadium.

Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua highlighted Embu County’s selection due to its strategic geographical significance and its historical ties to the struggle for independence.

Madaraka Day, observed on June 1, commemorates Kenya’s attainment of independent internal self-governance from British colonial rule. Established under Article 8 of the 2010 Constitution, it holds significance as one of the nation’s three national holidays.

Bungoma’s selection as the upcoming celebration’s host underscores the region’s growing importance in national events and development initiatives.
