Chelsea Draw 1-1 With Southampton

Sothampton have conceded 5 penalties this season in the Premier League.

Mason Mount was the star as Chelsea came from behind to play a 1-1 draw at Southampton at St.Mary’s on Saturday.

Chelsea dominted the possession in the early stages but were unable to carve out any meaningful opportunities apart from a decent chance for Marcos Alonso.

And, against the run of play, it was Southampton who broke the deadlock with Takumi Minamino producing a brilliant finish in the 33rd minute.

In the second half, Chelsea came back with renewed attitude and were able to level things up within ten minutes of restart as Mason Mount fired home a penalty after having been brought down by Danny Ings in the Southampton box.

As Chelsea pushed for a winner, it was Mount who was leading. He was constantly willing to take possession and attempted to take shots on goal.

Mount proved once more that he was never in the side under Frank Lampard because of favoritism. He is undeniably one of the Blues best players.

However, Saints manager Hasenhuttl was satisfied with a positive result.

“A draw feels like a win,” he said. “It’s a step towards us returning to our normal form. “We are believing in what we are doing. The Premier League is tough. For us, it is good that we take a point from such a strong side.”

However, no side has dropped more points from winning positions in the Premier League than Southampton and once again they were their own worst enemy as Ings gave away a penalty.

Failure to win meant Chelsea missed the opportunity to strengthen their position in the top four but Tuchel will have learned a lot about how his side fare when they come up against sides set up to stifle them.

“We not only had possession but good possession in the opponent half, in the last 20 metres we lacked quality and that is the truth,” said Tuchel.

“We lacked determination, aggressiveness and more one on one chances. We controlled 80 metres, all counter attacks and when you control the match like this and you need a penalty to score, you see the problem is clear.”
