President William Ruto’s UDA party has distanced itself from Nandi Senator Samson Cherargei’s proposal to extend the presidential term limit to two seven-year terms.
In a statement issued on Monday, Secretary General Cleophas Malala stated that the senator’s proposal does not represent the party’s or the President’s position.
“The UDA Party respects and upholds the Senator’s personal views but particularly on the referenced subject, those views do not reflect the perspectives of the UDA Party and/or its Party Leader, President William Ruto,” he said.
The former Kakamega Senator added that Ruto swore to uphold and protect the Constitution, which specifies the presidential term limit.
“The President solemnly swore to respect and uphold and defend the constitution which is abundantly clear and categorical on the Presidential term limit.”
Senator Cherargei proposed extending the presidential term limit from five to seven years in a memorandum submitted to Kenya’s National Dialogue Committee on Friday in Bomas.
The proposal has sparked outrage, with both sides of the political divide opposing it.
Senator Cherargei believes that five years in office is insufficient for running a government.
