Chickengate Scandal Adjourned Over ‘Sick’ Suspect

The three who were to appear before Milimani Law courts anti-corruption court are facing fraud charges for over Ksh 50 million that was paid as a bribe by a UK firm

The hearing of a fraud case against Ex-IEBC boss James Humphrey Oswago, Trevy Oyombra, and Hamida Ali Kibwana has been adjourned after one of the defence lawyers told the court that one of the accused persons is indisposed.

The three are facing corruption charges famously known as Chickengate Scam involving procurement irregularities, conflict of interest and receiving a benefit in the award of the tender for the supply of ballot papers the for South Mugirango Constituency by-election

The three who were to appear before Milimani Law courts anti-corruption court are facing fraud charges for over Ksh 50 million that was paid as a bribe by a UK firm to former members of the defunct Interim Independent Electoral Commission and the Kenya National Examination Council to award it a printing tender.

A four-year investigation by UK’s Serious Fraud Unit revealed that the Kenyan electoral and examination officials allegedly received bribes code-named chicken through their agent, Trevy Oyombra to receive lucrative printing tenders.

Following this investigation, the three were arrested in February 2017 and charged with the said offenses, they were later released on a cash bail of Ksh 600,000.

The case was slated for hearing from August 1 to 3rd 2022.
