Chief Justice Emeritus Maraga is running on a ticket of integrity, honesty, rule of law and adherence to the 2010 Constitution. And all other statutes as by law established.
That he is qualified to run for Presidency of Kenya is truly a non issue. After all, he has completed two terms at the Chief Justice of Kenya and President of the High Court.
Prior to this, he served as a Judge in the Court of Appeal. It was during this period that he was appointed to Chair the Justice Mutava tribunal over allegations of gross misconduct and dereliction to duty
The Tribunal ended the career of one of the brightest legal minds in Kenya. The decision was vindicated by the Supreme Court
When the Presidential dispute reached the Supreme Court in 2017, Maranga sent UhuRuto packing and ordered IEBC to conduct a fresh Presidential election
He had stamped his authority, buoyed by Judicial independence enjoyed by judges.
Despite veiled threats by President Kenyatta and his then DP Ruto, Maraga remained resolute.
The ruling and determination of that presidential ballot led to bad blood with the executive, long after he had sworn them in on 26th October 2017.
It was this ruling that thrust Maranga to the lime light and made him a house hold name.
In Nyanza and Western, Maranga became an instant celebrity. He furiously fought allegations that jurispesa had played a role in the decision.
But some quarters feel that Maraga should form an advisory bench of eminent persons to help compas Kenya in difficult times.
They opine that Kenyan politics is too tribal and dirty for him, and that his Omugusii community lacks the numbers tyranny required to win and election.
He’s also feared to be a religious zealot- He refused to convene the Supreme Court on Saturday- a Sabbath because he is an Elder of the SDA church
There have been furious suggestions that Justice Maraga should be the running mate to his former University of Nairobi(UoN) class mate Dr. Stephen Kalonzo Musyoka.
Then there is the little irritation occasioned by the entry of Dr. Fred Matiang’i to politics..and his claim to Abagusii kingship.
Matiangi is a bully at home and abroad. He transitioned from the academia world to politics seamlessly.
During his tenure as minister for Education during the UhuRuto Presidency, Matiangi terrorized pupils and parents alike. Particularly responsible for moulding the ‘stubborn’ yet sharp Gen Zs.
He managed to bring order to schools besides takling exam cheating.
His handlers say he will politically eat Justice Maraga as a snack for his mid morning tea.
During the latter years of President Uhuru, and as the Internal Security CS, Matiangi made contacts with cartels who control Kisii politics…including Chinkororo..
