COP27: President Ruto Set To Reunite With Raila In Egypt

Raila Odinga, the leader of the Azimio party, left the country on Monday, November 7, for Egypt, where he will attend the 2022 United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP 27).

In a statement, ODM confirmed that Odinga had left the country and would be attending the conference as an African Union member.

“Raila Odinga on Monday morning left for Sharm El-Sheikh, Egypt to attend this year’s United Nations’ 27th Conference of the Parties on Climate Change. He was invited to address the meeting in his capacity as the AU High Rep. for Infrastructure Development in Africa,” read the statement in part.

StateHouse Spokesperson Hussein Mohammed, who accompanied Ruto to the climate conference, revealed that the president will deliver his address between 4:35pm and 4:55pm.

The president is also expected to hold bilateral talks with world leaders. On the sidelines, he met Rwandan President Paul Kagame.

Others include Comoros President Azali Assoumani and Angolan President Esperança Maria Eduardo Francisco da Costa.

Ruto also met with African Development Bank President Akinwumi Adesina, praising the AFDB’s commitment to supporting Kenya’s green energy projects, geothermal and wind.

The president was accompanied by Environment Cabinet Secretary Soipan Tuya, Energy Cabinet Secretary Davis Chirchir, Foreign Affairs Cabinet Secretary Alfred Mutua, and Kirinyaga Governor Anne Waiguru.

Raila and Ruto have not physically met since the August 9 General Election, but they have been exchanging words about the state of the country’s economy.

The former Prime Minister has kept the President on his toes by pressing him to keep the campaign promises he made to Kenyans.

He also chastised Ruto for conducting a witchhunt against members of the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) Special Service Unit (SSU), which has since been disbanded.
