Counties urged to step up anti-Corona measures, as cases near 10,000

Health Ministry CS Mutahi Kagwe has urged counties to step up in implementing health protocols as more people travel back to upcountry – By Gerald Gekara.

This is after President Uhuru Kenyatta eased containment measures in the hotspot counties of Nairobi, Mandera, and Mombasa.

CS Kagwe urged Kenyans to exercise responsibility in order to avoid straining county health facilities.

“We didn’t open up the Country because we have contained the disease, we believe Kenyans are responsible enough… No one will be airlifted for treatment in other counties.,” said CS Kagwe.

In the latest statistics, 183 positive coronavirus cases have been reported, raising Kenya’s tally of confirmed cases to 8, 250.

So far, the total of samples tested in the country has hit 193,455.

In terms of counties, Nairobi continues to lead with (100) new cases, Machakos (37), Kiambu (14), Msa (13), Kajiado (11), Nakuru (5), Busia (3).

Health Cabinet Secretary Mutahi Kagwe added that 90 patients have been discharged from health facilities, raising Kenya’s total recoveries to 2,504.

3 More people died, further pushing Kenya’s death toll to 167.

CS Kagwe also presided over the launch of the Mental Health report that will guide the adoption of mental health challenges during the coronavirus pandemic.

Addressing the media, the Mental Health Taskforce chairperson, Dr. Frank Njenga beckoned the ministry to consider policies to manage mental health.

“The increasing cases of depression are causing suffering in homes. Many people are living with stigma. We need to put in place strategies to manage mental health to deal with the burden which is there,” Dr. Frank Njenga.
