Couple Charged in Tragic Siaya Fire That Killed Nine Family Members

A couple has been charged with nine counts of murder in connection with a devastating fire that claimed the lives of nine members of a single family in Upanda village, Siaya County, two months ago.

Christopher Owino and his wife, Roseline Atieno, appeared before Justice David Kemei at the Siaya High Court on Monday, where they faced charges stemming from the April 23 inferno that razed the home of Ouma Opondo Adalla, killing him, his wife Jecinter Anyango, and their seven children.

The victims, who ranged in age from just six months to 17 years, perished when their home was engulfed in flames in what police initially described as a suspected arson attack by unknown assailants. The family was laid to rest on May 9 in a somber ceremony attended by hundreds of mourners, who demanded justice for the horrific loss.

Owino and Atieno have denied all charges. Represented by their lawyer, the couple applied for cash bail of Ksh.500,000 each, assuring the court of their willingness to abide by any conditions imposed.

The prosecution, however, opposed the bail application, citing procedural requirements and the need to file a formal affidavit before the request could be considered.

Justice Kemei scheduled June 9, 2025, as the date for delivering a ruling on the bail application.

The tragic deaths have shocked the nation, with local leaders and residents urging the judiciary to expedite the legal process and deliver justice to the bereaved family.
