NMG Journalists Fear for Their Lives After Exposing Church Scam

Written by Lisa Murimi

Fear has gripped two Nation Media Group (NMG) journalists after they exposed a chilling scam run under the guise of faith.

Ibrahim Karanja and Frederick Muitiriri, the journalists behind NTV’s explosive exposé Sacred Swindlers, now say their lives are in danger.

The documentary, aired on Sunday, May 25, peeled back the curtain on Yahweh Media Services, a so-called church accused of exploiting desperate believers through fake miracles and disguised gambling schemes.

Since airing the story, Karanja and Muitiriri have received multiple anonymous calls—silent, eerie, and threatening.

The silence on the other end is deafening, but the message is loud and clear: they are being watched.

On Monday, May 26, NMG took urgent action, filing a formal report with Nairobi Regional Commander George Seda.

In a letter to police, the media house pleaded for protection and demanded swift investigations into the threats.

“This is therefore to formally record the perceived threats to the safety and lives of the said reporters, and to request investigations into the sources of the threats,” read part of the letter to Seda.

The exposé has already prompted the Communications Authority of Kenya to ban Yahweh Media Services, citing license violations and the illegal airing of gambling promotions.

“Even with the directives to suspend advertising of all gambling-related content, a review by the Authority revealed the continued airing of such prohibited content by some broadcasters,” CA disclosed.

Yet, the danger remains for those who dared to speak the truth.

This isn’t an isolated case. In Kenya, brave journalists continue to face danger for uncovering corruption and deception.

As the nation applauds the truth-tellers, their courage is tested and their safety uncertain. The question lingers: who protects the messengers when truth threatens the powerful?
