Court Frees Rongo Church Leaders Amid Cult Allegations

The High Court in Migori has released four senior members of the controversial Melkio St. Joseph Mission of Messiah in Africa, located in Rongo Sub-County, after more than a month in police custody. The quartet had been under investigation over alleged cult-like practices, including claims of radicalisation.

Their release follows a successful application by their lawyer, Benard Achola, who challenged an earlier ruling by a lower court that had ordered their continued detention for 21 more days. The High Court overturned that decision, granting the four church leaders release on free bond and surety.

“I am satisfied with the court’s ruling, which respects the rights of my clients,” said Achola, who emphasized that the accused would comply fully with the court’s directives. These include staying away from the church premises while police investigations continue.

The case has drawn public attention since the church was shuttered by government authorities after two individuals died while attending prayer sessions. Disturbingly, one of the deceased was reportedly buried within the church compound, prompting further scrutiny of the church’s practices.

This is not the first time the court has intervened in the matter. Several weeks ago, 49 other church members were also released on bond by a Rongo court amid the ongoing probe into the religious institution’s operations.

The Melkio St. Joseph Mission of Messiah in Africa remains closed as investigations continue. Authorities have not ruled out further legal action depending on the findings of the ongoing inquiry.
