Court Remands Rugby Player Accused Of Hiring A Hitman To Silence A Witness

Former rugby player Alex Olaba Mahaga will be held in police custody for another seven days.

On Friday morning, Mr. Olaba appeared before Senior Principal Magistrate Bernard Ochoi.

The former footballer, who is accused of gang rape in court, was arrested on suspicion of hiring a hit man to assassinate a victim in the case.

Olaba made many efforts, both consciously and implicitly, to approach key witnesses in the case in order to sway its outcome, according to the investigation officer.

He was arrested at Madaraka farm, according to the police report, while attending a meeting whose agenda included the removal of a primary witness in the gang rape case he is facing.

To get to the bottom of the charges, detectives investigating on the investigation are now doing a technical investigation of his account.

The defense demanded that he be held for ten days until the investigation is completed.

He has allegedly missed his last court hearing and told the judge he was in Bungoma, according to the prosecutors.

Why Was Olaba Jailed?

Alex and Frank, who were sentenced to 15 years in jail, had their sentence reversed in which they took a fresh appeal on 7th of July 2020.

The duo was earlier found guilty of gang-raping a female singer at an apartment located in Nairobi.

In her police statement, the woman claimed that she attended a party in Kilimani where the two rugby players were present. She later confirmed that she left with the two, claiming to have known only one of them.

She went on to state that the two took advantage of her intoxicated state and raped her.

Alex Olaba and Frank Wanyama were both charged for the offence, and have not taken part in any rugby events since their case proceedings began.
