CS Duale suspends 40 health facilities for defrauding SHA system

Ministry of Health Cabinet Secretary Aden Duale has suspended at least 40 health facilities for defrauding the Social Health Authority(SHA).

According to the Health Cabinet Secretary, the 40 health facilities have been suspended immediately as investigations kick off.

Duale, while speaking to members of the press on Friday, August 8, 2025, revealed that an investigation is underway to recover any money paid to the facilities tied to the fraudulent scheme.

“The Social Health Authority has suspended forty health facilities found to have engaged in criminal activities. They have engaged in corruption and theft of public resources. This suspension is effective immediately,” Duale said.

Similarly, Duale has revealed that for accountability and transparency purposes, the Ministry of Health has published the forty health facilities in the Kenya Gazette.

“In the interest of transparency and public accountability, a full list of these suspended facilities has been duly published in the Kenya Gazette number 168,” Daule said.

In addition, Duale has stated that during the investigations, the facilities shall not receive any capitation from the Social Health Fund, further adding that the facilities will be expected to return the money taken during the fraudulent Scheme.

“During the investigation period, these facilities will not receive any benefits from SHA, and we will surcharge them for the money lost,” Duale said.

Duale has also revealed that the Ministry of Health has suspended at least twelve Health Professionals who are allegedly part of the fraud scheme, and according to the Ministry of Health, are associated with the forty hospitals.

According to the report by Daule, eight of the health professionals are doctors from Nairobi, Kilifi and Bungoma, while four of them are clinicians from Nairobi and Homabay.

“Our digital system and forensic audit identify several health professionals, 8 doctors in Nairobi, Bungoma and Kilifi, 4 clinicians, Nairobi and Homabay,” Duale said.

On his part, Duale announced that the Social Health Authority has withdrawn all its user rights from all the digital health platforms with immediate effect.

“SHA has withdrawn immediately the user rights for these doctors and clinical officers from all the authorities and the digital health platforms,” Duale revealed.
