Interior Cabinet Secretary Dr. Fred Matiang’i interrupted protocol to unveil the much awaited Huduma Number cards.

The National Integrated Identity Management system (NIIMS) that was launched two years ago, was finally presented to President Uhuru Kenyatta, First Lady Margaret Kenyatta and 10 other individuals drawn from Kisii County.

The cards, that were presented as samples are still yet to be launched. This is because the position of the Data commissioner is yet to be filled.

Matiang’i said the process of generating the cards was complete as the government prepares the second round of mass registeration in the country.

Since 2005 the Government of Kenya (GoK) has initiated registration of persons in the country using a harmonized approach to address duplication of efforts and to cut costs in registration processes.

This started with the consolidation of data from primary population registration agencies.
The purpose of this initiative is to create and manage a central master population database which will be the ‘single source of truth’ on a person’s identity.

The database will contain information of all Kenyan citizens and foreign nationals residing in Kenya and will serve as a reference point for ease of service delivery to the people of Kenya.
