The International Day of Zero Tolerance for Female Genital Mutilation is set to celebrate its 12th anniversary on February 6, 2023.

The celebrations were established by the UN General Assembly in accordance with the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.

The National Gender and Equality Commission and The National Youth Council (NYC) will lead the commemoration.

The theme of the 2023 is “Partnership with Men and Boys to Transform Social and Gender Norms to End Female Genital Mutilation”.

Governments, civil society organizations, partners, activists raise awareness on its impact as a violation of women’s fundamental rights.

The Sawazisha Gumzo program, a locally led effort that seeks to address the threat through intra- and intergenerational discourse, is part of NYC’s commitment to increasing funding to End FGM.

NYC says the day is a reminder to step up efforts to eradicate the practice in all of its manifestations.
