DCI Arrests Suspect Over Vehicle Torched During Violent Fuel Protests in Githurai

Detectives have arrested a man believed to have played a role in the burning of a motor vehicle during violent fuel-related protests that rocked parts of Nairobi in mid-May.

The suspect, identified as Elisha Karanja Gatwa, was apprehended in Ruiru following investigations into an arson incident at Githurai Roundabout, where a vehicle was set ablaze amid unrest linked to demonstrations over rising fuel costs.

According to investigators, detectives pieced together leads gathered from the scene and surrounding inquiries, eventually linking Gatwa to the incident before effecting his arrest.

Authorities say the suspect is currently in custody undergoing processing as investigations continue.

The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) said detectives are pursuing additional suspects believed to have participated in the incident, signalling further arrests could follow.

Police warned that individuals found responsible for acts of violence, destruction of property and criminal conduct during demonstrations would face legal consequences.

The arrest stems from protests witnessed in Githurai and sections along Thika Road, where demonstrations escalated into chaos following public anger over increased fuel prices.

The unrest coincided with a nationwide strike by transport sector players, disrupting movement and paralysing transport services across major roads and towns.

According to Nairobi Regional Police Commander Issa Mohamud, a total of 225 people were arrested in connection with the protests.

The strike was later called off after the government announced several interventions, including a reduction in diesel prices, reforms targeting insurance challenges and measures aimed at protecting public service vehicle operators from auctioneers.

Investigators say efforts remain ongoing to establish the full network of individuals involved in criminal acts reported during the demonstrations.
