The death toll from a Christmas Eve gas tanker explosion in Johannesburg has risen to 18, officials said on Tuesday, as South African President Cyril Ramaphosa promised to assist those affected by the blast.
The explosion ripped the roof off the Tambo Memorial hospital’s emergency department, destroyed two houses, several cars, and injured bystanders up to 500 meters away in the city’s Boksburg suburb.
The car caught fire beneath a low bridge.
According to police, the truck driver has been arrested on suspicion of culpable homicide.
“Nine of the 18 deceased are Tambo Memorial Hospital staff,” said the Gauteng Department of Health in a statement.
Hospital patients and children, according to President Ramaphosa, were among those succumbed.
“The hearts of the nation go out to everyone affected by this tragic incident,” said the president.
“While we await the results of the investigations into this tragedy, this incident… calls on all of us to exercise caution and avoid risk when we are on our roads.”
