Matatu Driver Jailed For Causing The Death of Deputy IG’s Daughter

A matatu driver has been sentenced to serve three years in prison for causing the death of Deputy Inspector General Edward Mbugua’s daughter.

Patrick Macharia Magu appeared before Milimani magistrate Esther Kimilu Thursday for the Judgement and sentencing.

He was convicted of the offense of causing death by driving unroadworthy motor vehicle.

The Court ruled that Postmortem investigations confirmed that the deceased died as a result of injury emanating from a blunt object, confirming that the accident caused her death.

The prosecution claims Magu knocked Meline Waithera Mbugua down and then sandwiched her between two vehicles.

The accident occured on June 17, 2021 at the Tom Mboya and Maragua Lane junction in Nairobi.

Magu was driving an Isuzu minibus registered as KBR 065B.

Waithera was crossing from Tom Mboya Street when the incident occurred, according to police.

According to witnesses, Magu’s matatu was reversing when it crushed Waithera against another stationary matatu, severely injuring her head.


She suffered head injuries and was rushed in an ambulance to Kenyatta National Hospital, where she was confirmed dead on arrival.
