Kenyan doctor and DNA-testing advocate Peter Ngumba has spoken openly about his heartbreak after discovering he is not the biological father of the child he has been raising for the past two years.
In an emotional TikTok video, Dr Ngumba said, “I am tearing up because I did a DNA test between myself and my child, who is two years old. I am not the father.”
He recalled a memory from her second birthday earlier this month, saying he had given her Sh2,000 to mark her turning two — a gesture he had planned to continue every year until she turned 25.
Ngumba explained that the child’s mother had previously expressed uncertainty about the girl’s paternity, prompting him to seek clarity through a DNA test.
The results confirmed his worst fear.
“At one point, the mother told me she didn’t know who the father was. So, I saw that it was a good time to do a DNA test. When the results came out, I realised I was not the biological father,” he said. “All along, I had told myself I wanted a daughter, and I wanted her to look like this one.”
Despite the painful revelation, the medic reflected on the bond he had built with the child, noting that he had cared for her since birth.
“When the mother told me she was pregnant, I did not believe it at first, but I didn’t deny it. I have taken the child to clinics, bathed her, and cherished the moments when she calls me ‘baba.’ Right now, I’m just sad, but I urge parents: go do that DNA test,” he added.
The video has since sparked widespread discussion online, drawing varied reactions from Kenyans.
Instagram user Boss Chick Cess wrote, “Mchimba kisima ameingia wenyewe hapa, wahenga wamefurahi ajab.”
Another user, Mtunecessary, commented, “Kinyozi amenyolewa jameni.”
