Doctors In Mombasa Issue Strike Notice

Health care workers stage a protest

Following unresolved November and December salary arrears, the Kenya Medical Practitioners, Pharmacists and Dentists Union (KMPDU) has issued a one-week strike warning to the Mombasa County administration.

On Tuesday, KMPDU Coast Branch Secretary Dr. Nassir Shaban issued the ultimatum, citing a stalemate in talks with the county health department over their issues.

Shaban claims they have been in talks with the Mombasa county government for at least two years about guaranteeing that all of the county’s doctors are covered by the National Health Insurance Fund, but to no avail.

He pointed out that 40 doctors at the Coast General Health and Referral Hospital are not members of the National Health Insurance Fund.

The union has also accused the county government of persistent salary delays, failure to promote 70 health consultants who have been in the same job group for more than five years, and failure to absorb contracted doctors under permanent and pensionable terms, as required by a national government circular.
