The Kenya Medical Practitioners, Pharmacists and Dentists’ Union (KMPDU) have vehemently condemned the alleged abduction of Dr. Austin Omondi by unidentified individuals using a government vehicle.
In a statement, issued by KMPDU Secretary General Dr. Davji Atellah, Dr. Omondi was leading a blood donation drive to assist injured protestors when he was taken.
The Union expresses solidarity with the ongoing protests while highlighting the challenges faced by the medical sector, including unemployment among doctors and interns awaiting licensure.
“The “Medics for Kenya” initiative, led by young doctors under our Union’s guidance, provides essential first aid to protestors injured by violent police actions.”
They criticize the government’s prioritization of international financial institutions over its own citizens.
KMPDU has given an ultimatum for the immediate release and threatens to shut down all public and private medical facilities across Kenya by midnight if he is not returned safely.
“We urge the individuals driving police car KCU 819H to return Dr. Omondi immediately to continue his life-saving humanitarian work. Medical personnel remain impartial, dedicated to saving lives on all sides of any conflict.”
This is the second recorded case of abduction in relation to the Finance Bill protests.
On Saturday, 22, June, Billy aka Crazy Nairobian was abducted in mysterious circumstances. He was later released at around 10.pm with the help of aggravated activism and input from Law Society Of Kenya (LSK).
