DPP Achieves Five-Year Sentences for Two Men in KSh 2.49 Million Ivory Trafficking Case

The Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) has secured the conviction of two men found in unlawful possession of four elephant tusks weighing 24.9 kilograms and valued at KSh 2.49 million.

Senior Principal Magistrate Hon. Njeri Thuku, sitting at the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) Law Courts, sentenced Moriati Ole Kimore and Lepapa Saruni to five years in prison each after finding them guilty of the offense.

The conviction stems from their arrest on August 28, 2024, in the Ntarara area of Kajiado South Sub-County. The two were apprehended while transporting the ivory on a motorcycle by members of the Serious Crimes Unit, operating under a multi-agency task force made up of various national security bodies.

During the trial, the Prosecution, led by Ms. Paula Rono, presented strong and convincing evidence that tied the accused directly to the illegal possession and transportation of the ivory.
