Drought: Government Opt Cash Over Relief Food

Kenya is set to change policy from distributing relief food to cash transfer programs for starving Kenyans.

Public Service, Gender, Senior Citizens Affairs & Special Programmes CS Margaret Kobia said the measures will offer increased accountability among local leaders in charge of the transfers.

"Going forward, the Government is shifting policy from distribution of food to cash transfer for efficiency and accountability in addressing the situation. I would like to assure the public that the Government is focused on the right trajectory towards winning the war against the impact of the drought."

Dr. Kobia was speaking after a meeting with Development Partners working in the Arid and Semi-Arid Lands (ASALs) Sector Working Group.

Kenya is currently experiencing drought in 23 counties within the arid and semi-arid lands.

As of November 6, the national government has spent Ksh. 2 Billion to mitigate drought.

Ksh. 1.2 Billion from the sum, has been spent on food distribution to 2.5 million people
