Drunk Officer Opens Fire at Gigiri Police Canteen, Kills Colleague

A night of drinking at the Gigiri police canteen in Westlands turned tragic on Sunday when a police officer opened fire, killing a colleague and injuring another.

Constable Limo Nahason, reportedly attached to Parliament as a protection officer, fired at Constable Eric Munga of Runda Police Station, hitting him in the chest. He also shot Corporal Philip Kae, a Judiciary officer, in the lower abdomen.

According to a police report filed at Gigiri Police Station, the shooting occurred just before midnight. The victims were rushed to Aga Khan University Hospital, where Munga was pronounced dead upon arrival. Kae is currently receiving treatment and is reported to be in stable condition.

Authorities recovered a Jericho pistol (serial number 44332745) loaded with 14 rounds of 9mm ammunition from the suspect. A spent cartridge was also found at the scene, along with a Parliament access card in the suspect’s wallet. The firearm has been seized as an exhibit pending ballistic analysis.

Following his arrest, Nahason is expected to face charges as investigations continue. Munga’s body has been taken to the Kenyatta University Funeral Home for a post-mortem examination.

The incident has sparked concerns over firearm discipline among officers, particularly those entrusted with high-level security duties. Police are yet to confirm the motive behind the shooting or whether prior disputes existed between the involved officers.

Authorities have assured the public of a thorough investigation into the matter, as questions arise about firearm handling and officer conduct while off duty.

More updates to follow as the case develops.
