In a letter addressed to EAC Cabinet Secretary Adan Mohammed, as well as his counterparts from Rwanda, Burundi, Uganda, and Tanzania, EAC Council Chairperson Vincent Biruta lauded the positive responses from member states on the request to support the candidature of the Republic of Kenya for the post.

“I would like to inform you that Ambassador Amina Mohamed is endorsed as the candidate of the East African Community to the post of Director-General of the World Trade Organization,” He said.

The endorsement comes as the second phase of consultations for the selection of the next WTO Director-General comes to an end today the 6th October 2020.

The goal of the consultations was to narrow down the field of candidates from five to two.

CS Amina welcomed the endorsement saying, “Thank you to the Ministers of Trade of the East African Community for their unanimous support for my candidacy to be the next WTO Director General. I am honoured by your confidence.”

She has vowed to use her experience in trade and politics and take personal responsibility to ensure an informal consultation process on WTO reforms.

“The new Director-General will face enormous challenges. If selected I will devote all my energy, skills, knowledge and experience to these tasks. My long experience as a Minister and as a negotiator, both regionally and internationally, have prepared me for the task,” She said.

Amina says she will support Members to complete the negotiations on fisheries subsidies and significantly advance the negotiations on agriculture.
