Uhuru’s new Auditor-General Nancy Janet Kabui Gathungu is set to be cleared by Parliament to occupy a seat left vaccant for nearly 11 Months.
The office is bound to face a backlog of audit reports on spending by State offices within six months after the end of every financial year in June.
Eduard Ouko was the first person to occupy the office under the 2010 Constitution, retired in August last year on completion of his eight-year non-renewable term.
Ouko was at the forefront in declaring faulty payments systems as well as named officials involved in shady deals.
However, despite the spirited campaign against corruption, the former Auditor General did not have it easy. He was involved in a series of public spats with President Uhuru for issues among others, an alleged collusion with the United States government to siphon public funds.
This led to the start of a painstaking battle to oust the Auditor from his position.
In 2017, Auditor General Edward Ouko sued President Uhuru Kenyatta and Parliament. Reason? An alleged plot to eject him from office.
In his application filed under a certificate of urgency by lawyer Otiende Omolo, Mr. Ouko wanted the by the speaker and clerk to commit a petition for his removal before Parliament cancelled.
All eyes however will be on her ability to question the government on crucial irregularities, should there be any.
Having served as the Director of Quality Assurance at the Auditor-General’s office, this position should be a walk in the park.
Kabui is expected to serve for eight years if Parliament approves her nomination.
