Edwin Sifuna: ODM violated party rules by installing Oburu as interim leader

He argued that the party should have allowed one of the Deputy Party Leaders to act temporarily for a short period (suggesting one month) instead of a direct appointment.

Sifuna stated that the process used to install Siaya Senator Oburu Oginga as the acting party leader departed from established party rules and the ODM Constitution.

He argued that the party should have allowed one of the Deputy Party Leaders to act temporarily for a short period (suggesting one month) instead of a direct appointment.

He emphasized that a special National Delegates Convention (NDC) must be convened within three months to procedurally and properly elect or ratify a new leader, as it is the party’s supreme organ.

Sifuna revealed he was not present at the meeting that made the decision, as he was in India at the time to help repatriate the body of the late Raila Odinga.

He has also questioned the financing of “Linda Ground” rallies organized by the Oburu-aligned faction, stating authoritatively that these funds are not coming from ODM headquarters.

Despite these challenges, the ODM National Executive Committee (NEC) and National Governing Council (NGC) have formally ratified Oburu Oginga as the party leader as of November 2025. Sifuna remains the Secretary-General but has faced internal pressure and calls for resignation from the Oburu faction.
