Four people were evacuated after being seriously injured when an Improvised Explosive Device (IED) went off in Elwak Town, Mandera County.
In response to the Monday morning blast, the Kenya Red Cross dispatched an emergency aircraft to transfer the victims to Kenyatta National Hospital for specialised care.
Five people were rushed to the Elwak subcounty hospital, but one died.
Major (Rtd) Venant Ndighila, the organization’s Emergency Preparedness and Response Manager, reported that the blast also triggered a serious road accident in Elwak town, that left many injured.
While local emergency teams promptly responded, the situation quickly became overwhelming, especially in providing first aid to severely injured individuals.
Some casualties required further medical attention, prompting the activation of the Kenya Red Cross casualty evacuation system.
An emergency aircraft was mobilized to transport patients to Kenyatta National Hospital for specialized treatment.
The Red Cross successfully evacuated four critically injured victims and deployed emergency response personnel to provide stabilization and psychosocial support to those affected.
Martin Muthui, a survivor of the blast, recounted the tragic events, where he and his seven colleagues were caught off guard, resulting in the loss of five lives and leaving him seriously injured.
The blast, caused by an Improvised Explosive Device, claimed the lives of at least 13 people in Elwak Town, Mandera County.
The incident occurred on Monday, April 29, morning, opposite a local Administration Police camp.
