The Universities of Embu and Murang’a have outperformed the University of Nairobi (UoN) in the newly released Sub-Saharan Africa University Rankings 2024.
Published by Times Higher Education on November 27, the rankings assessed 129 universities across 22 African countries.
Locally, Embu University emerged as Kenya’s top-ranked institution, followed by Strathmore University, Mount Kenya University, and the United States International University (USIU).
Kibabii University placed fifth, with Murang’a and Kabarak Universities closely trailing.
UoN was ranked eighth, with Kabianga and Lukenya Universities completing the top ten.
The rankings evaluated universities on metrics such as financial stability, teaching quality, faculty-to-student ratios, and the ability to equip students with skills for the workforce.
Ethical leadership and African societal impact were also considered.
Regionally, South African institutions dominated, with the University of Johannesburg ranked first, followed by the University of Pretoria and the University of Witwatersrand.
Rwanda’s University of Global Health Equity and University of Rwanda, along with Ghana’s University of Ghana and Ashesi University, also featured in the top ten.
Kenya was ranked third in overall country performance, scoring 54 points, behind South Africa (65) and Ghana (57), reaffirming its growing prominence in higher education.
