Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has accused the government of exposing him to harm following the withdrawal of his security detail earlier this week.
Gachagua, who is contesting his impeachment, said the decision left him vulnerable during a funeral in Limuru, where he was attacked.
Speaking after the incident, Gachagua described a chaotic scene at the funeral of Erastus Nduati.
Armed goons stormed the venue, attacking mourners with stones, machetes, iron bars, and plastic chairs. Gachagua said the attackers specifically targeted him as he headed to his car, forcing him to flee under a barrage of rocks.
“This is a very sad state of affairs and a major low for the state, who were clearly complicit in these actions,” Gachagua claimed. He alleged the attack was premeditated and facilitated by the withdrawal of his security.
The former Deputy President criticized the government for failing to protect former senior officials, saying such security is customary even after they leave office.
He expressed sympathy for the grieving family, who had to flee for safety during the chaos.
“We will not be scared away from standing with Kenyans who need us to support them in their moments of need,” Gachagua said, vowing to continue engaging with the public despite such challenges.
The government has not yet responded to Gachagua’s allegations. The incident has drawn widespread condemnation, with calls for investigations and stronger security measures for all Kenyans.
